Firefly, on the other hand, not only uses the western format but also the western veneer. While Sci-Fi franchises like Star Trek or Star Wars were largely inspired by westerns, they stayed firmly in the Sci-Fi genre while using the basic concepts of westerns. The main piece of evidence for the sinister nature of The Alliance is the experimentation on River (which is bad enough), but I would have liked to have known more background for The Alliance: were they a totalitarian regime? were the leaders corrupt, lining their pockets and neglecting their citizens? However, I can overlook these unanswered questions because the show was cancelled after one season.įirefly’s unique blend of Western, Sci-Fi, and Asian Influencesįirefly’s blend of genres can be a double-edged sword: it’s creates a unique and interesting world, but it may be a little jarring. The characters speak Chinese (without subtitles, leaving you to draw your own conclusions about what was said… unless you speak Chinese), and The Alliance is portrayed in a negative light but without a lot of evidence to suggest why they are bad within the show. There is a lot that isn’t explained in the show about the Firefly Universe and requires additional reading, but in my opinion these are questions that likely would have been explained had there been more seasons. Oddly enough, there is a lack of aliens in Firefly despite numerous planets being colonized the closest that Firefly gets to aliens are the Reavers, which are humans that have mutated into, for all intents and purposes, brutal zombies (which are only important in two episodes and the sequel movie). The future is set up to be imperfect, but not so dark as to be off-putting: Earth has been used up, planets have been terraformed and colonized and under rule by The Alliance the closer you are to The Alliance’s Core Planets, the more advanced and civilized it is, the further out you are, the more backwater and Old West styled it is. Right: Shepherd Book reads in the Serenity dining roomįirefly has a lot of great pieces that build an interesting and unique show, and the fact that it’s so well put together in the first season of the show is impressive (as opposed to a lot of Sci-Fi shows that usually need a couple of seasons to find their niche). Left: Kaylee attends a shindig on one of the core worlds Each week, the Serenity crew takes on jobs on different planets, and each of the character’s backstories sees new light. Additionally, Mal accepted Shepherd Book (a preacher), Simon and River (two fugitive siblings on the run from The Alliance since Simon broke River out of an experimental lab), and Inara (a companion or courtesan) as a part of his crew. His crew is made up of his first mate Zoe (an old war buddy), Wash (pilot and Zoe’s husband), Kaylee (ship’s mechanic), and Jayne (a mercenary). Malcolm Reynolds (or Mal for short), captain of the Firefly class space ship Serenity, fought in that war on the losing side, and now earns a living with his crew smuggling and taking odd jobs. The Alliance placed those planets under a single government, even fighting a civil war to unite the planets. In the 26th century, Earth has been used up, prompting the human race to terraform other planets. Did I become one of the mourners of Firefly? Did I curse the sudden and inevitable betrayal from the TV executives that cancelled it? Is there no place I can be since I’ve found Serenity? Or did I not care? Either way, you can’t take the sky from me. Firefly sounds like it’s right up my alley! Due to the quarantine, I finally made my way through Firefly’s fourteen episodes. I like sci-fi I tend to like hidden gems in TV shows, movies, and video games and I always seem to gravitate towards shows that deserved sequels that they never got. Firefly was one of those shows that I heard about for years, and it’s been on my list of shows to watch (a very long list, indeed). ![]() ![]() Certainly if something has generated such passion as that, there must be something to it. The internet is filled with praise of the show and mournful cries about how it was cancelled after one season while other less deserving shows continually get renewed. Start up a conversation with a group of Sci-fi fans, and you’ll no doubt run into fans of the show Firefly.
